Cancer is a very frightening and life changing diagnosis with treatments that can sometimes be just as devastating. Conventional methods often come with harsh side effects such as infections, weakness, and malnutrition along with questions about how effective they are. Yet, there are many stories of survival, especially when using alternative cancer treatments, allowing the patient to have a sense of control with a lowered risk of serious side effects.

Alternatives to chemotherapy may be used by those who desire a proven and non-toxic approach to treatment. They can also benefit patients during cancer treatment with conventional methods, and can be incorporated into an individualized program. Some people may prefer to bypass chemotherapy in exchange for a more natural approach using these methods.

An experienced doctor can offer guidance and help find a path that is right for the patient and their diagnosis. The following is a list of alternatives to chemotherapy and other natural or non-toxic methods used in natural cancer programs.

Alternatives to Chemotherapy and Other Non-Toxic Therapies

Nutrition – When it comes to cancer treatment, high quality nutrition with whole foods and supplements can provide the body with everything it needs to aid in the healing process. Many foods today are highly processed and lacking nutrition, and may contain harmful pesticides or other substances that are known carcinogens. For this reason, a healthy diet is recommended by all, no matter what type of cancer treatment is used.

A holistic nutritional approach incorporates a whole, natural food diet that consists mainly of fresh, organic fruits and vegetables, vegetable juices, whole grains, fish, nuts, and foods that contain essential fatty acids, like fish or avocados. At the same time, animal protein is limited, while sugars, processed meats, unhealthy fats, junk foods, alcohol and soda are all removed from the diet.

Specialized nutritional supplements may be recommended for an added boost to a high-quality diet. One example of this is turmeric, which may help in the treatment of cancer, according to the Mayo Clinic. It is an antioxidant that fight carcinogens, and helps reduce inflammation, creating a better environment for healing. Another example is green tea, which is known to stop cancer cell growth. Every cancer is different, so a personalized diet that considers the patient’s individual needs works best.

Detoxification – While chemotherapy may be considered highly toxic to some people, a detoxification protocol is the opposite. Detoxification and body cleansing are processes that expedite the removal of toxic substances through diet, supplements and therapies like acupuncture or colon hydrotherapy.

We are exposed to many unnatural substances from the air, food and water, some of which are known carcinogens that can cause cancer. Internal waste accumulates and is often stored throughout the body such as dead cells from metabolic processes, waste in the digestive tract and pollutants collected and stored in adipose tissue.

During a cleanse or detox program, a person uses a cleansing or detox diet that is easy to digest and does not contribute to the toxin load. Herbal products may be taken to help remove excess waste and supply extra nutrition for organs like the liver or kidneys, which support the detoxification process. Helping the body remove excess waste allows it to heal without the interference of these pollutants.

Hyperthermia, also known as thermal therapy or thermotherapy, is an alternative to chemotherapy used by some alternative cancer treatment centers. It is a process in which an infected area of the patient is exposed to high temperatures to eradicate cancer cells. Typically, an ultrasound machine or another approved method is used to heat the area of the cancer, while the patient relaxes in a clinical setting for about an hour. Improved technology, research and experience in this field have helped doctors with heat application methods to effectively target cancer cells, with few side effects.

Diphenyleneiodonium chloride (DPI) is a non-toxic compound that researchers have found promising to stop cancer cells in their tracks. It works by blocking vitamin B-2, which in turn reduces 90% of the energy in the cell’s mitochondria, effectively “starving” cancer cells to their death. The best part is DPI seems to selectively attack cancer cells while leaving healthy cells intact. (1)

Oxygen therapy has been used for many ailments and diseases, but one of its most important applications is in the treatment of cancer. While not mainstream yet, oxygen therapy is an alternative to chemo and radiation for some patients and is performed with the use of a hyperbaric chamber. It is believed that the higher amount of oxygen that infiltrates the blood during this treatment creates a less acidic internal environment, which is detrimental to the growth or existence of cancer cells.

Vitamin C Therapy is showing some promise in early clinical studies. High doses of Vitamin C were found to be toxic to cancer cells in some clinical research. (2) It may also prolong life of cancer patients with advanced cancer and may reduce symptoms associated with those cancers.

These are just some of the alternatives to chemotherapy that are currently being used by those who desire a more non-toxic way to heal. Many doctors today offer complementary and integrative, natural treatment options for patients to choose from. In addition to these one may incorporate yoga, meditation, or deep breathing to help round out a cancer treatment program and improve the chances of a successful recovery.
