How to conduct a Breast Self-Exam

It is important for women of all ages to conduct a breast self-exam at least once a month.

Familiarize yourself with the look and feel of your breasts to detect any changes.

A breast self-exam can be performed lying down, standing up facing a mirror or in the shower.

1. Look

Check your breast and armpits for any changes in
size, shape, texture or colour.

2. Feel

Use your fingers to check for lumps or thickness in breast and armpits.

Use small circular motions moving from outside to centre.

  • Raise your right arm and use fingers of your left hand
  • Make sure to cover your entire breast until collarbone
  • Check armpit area
  • Repeat using right hand on left breast and armpit

3. Squeeze Gently

Check each nipple for discharge squeezing the gently.

If you find something abnormal, check with your doctor immediately.

Early detection makes breast cancer treatable and curable.
